Welcome to the first post of the Secular Feminist Self Help Book Review or SFSHBR (It’s a fish bar) for short!
As a part of my ongoing therapy process, I read A LOT of self-help books. My favorite of which is anything Brené Brown related.
Some of the books I’ve read can get a bit too much into the church realm, but can still be helpful. I will rate them as follows with a score of ten being the highest.
- Quality of Advice – Is the material presented in an easy to integrate way? Is it prescriptive or malleable? Do I see myself enacting any of these principles? Is the author relatable or way out there?
- Researched – Is the theory/advice well researched? Do they share the methodology of the studies quoted? Are the studies from reputable sources?
- Secular – How secular is the advice? Is there spiritual woo involved? Christianity? Does the author insist on a belief in god? These 3 scores will then be combined for an overall rating, which I’ll try to remember to put in the title.I have a good list of books I’ve already read waiting for review. Let me know if there are any that you want to read about first!
